The Essential Mikael Kennedy Polaroids

"In 2001, Mikael Kennedy began an odyssey, crisscrossing the continent and taking a series of Polaroid photographs that became the Passport to Trespass project. After a decade, this epic project is now coming to a terminus. Polaroid film is going extinct, and while efforts have been made to revive the process, pictures made with the old, sometimes long-expired, Polaroid film have a quality that The Impossible Project will never exactly duplicate.

Over the ensuing years, Kennedy's Polaroid photographs have been published in eleven monographs, culminating with Passport to Trespass, Volumes VIII & IX, which have just come out as a limited edition boxed set, covering the work he made from 2009-2011. Kennedy's Polaroids have also been exhibited from coast to coast, including an exhibition in 2010 of 500 images at the infamous Chelsea Hotel in New York. Kennedy's photographs are in numerous private collections as well as the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, in Houston.

All of the Polaroids that have been published as part of the Passport to Trespass project have been archived online, and now it is time to archive the prints themselves. Polaroids, are by their nature, a fugitive process, so it's fitting that the conclusion of this project also marks an end to their life on our website. We are retiring almost all of the Polaroid photographs that comprised Kennedy's Shoot the Moon exhibition, as well as those in the Hunt Them Out, and Saltwater River Guard series. For a limited time, we will keep a selection of 50 images online that we regard as our favourites, the essential Mikael Kennedy Passport to Trespass edit. All of the other prints will go into deep storage. A number of these 50 Polaroids are still available for purchase until 5 January, at which point we will close out the entire project.

Instant Gratification: From Polaroid to Impossible

Atlanta, GA. Jennifer Schwartz Gallery is proud to present Instant Gratification, a showcase of instant film photography. Jennifer Schwartz Gallery will host an opening reception on Saturday, October 15th from 7 to 10 P.M. The exhibition will be on display until Saturday, November 26th.

Why has instant film been able to survive in the digital age? What is it about the material that captures people's imagination and interest? Polaroid gave up on the material a few years ago, but since then, there has been a resurgent interest. Through groups like The Impossible Project, the 20x24 studio and others, the instant material has been given a new life in the 21st century. Gallery owner Jennifer Schwartz says, “in recent years there has been a revival of instant film, and photographers have learned to embrace the film’s inherent imperfections to create striking, innovative images.”

This exhibition will explore the magic of instant film by displaying different artists’ approach to the material, from "straight" imagery to the very abstract. Stylistically, the artists vary greatly from the haunting images of Magnus Stark to the street scenes of Mikael Kennedy to the romanticized women of Chloe Aftel.

On Friday, October 14th David Bias, vice president of Impossible USA and a die-hard instant film lover, will talk about the mission, challenges and successes of The Impossible Project. In October 2008 The Impossible Project saved the last Polaroid production plant and started to invent and produce totally new instant film materials for traditional Polaroid cameras. The lecture starts at 7 P.M. at Big Studio in the King Plow Arts Center and is sponsored by Atlanta Celebrates Photography, Big Studio and Jennifer Schwartz Gallery.

"Over the past decade, American born photographer Mikael Kennedy has taken thousands of Polaroids during what has often been described as a ‘Kerouac-esque” journey, wandering back and forth across the continent, hitching rides, couch surfing, moving from city to city. In 2010, Kennedy had his first solo show in New York City, titled “Shoot the Moon” with the Peter Hay Halpert Gallery who now represents this immense body of work. “Shoot the Moon”, an exhibition 500 Polaroids was an introduction to Kennedy’s story, edited down from the thousands of Polaroids. I have looked at this series countless times, and while all of his work is a mysterious narrative, it is the photographs of the women that have completely drawn me in.

“Pieces of the Moon” features 50 images that have been pulled from the original “Shoot the Moon” show. When the photographs of these women are shown along-side the other 450 images in the series, they’re a quiet part of the overall story. But when hung together in this smaller, more focused grouping they create a beautiful, feminine view into the personal life of the artist. There is an undeniable intimacy in each image, revealing an obvious closeness to the subject – however, to the viewer, the details still remain vague. Were these friends, lovers, strangers, or all of the above? The images are titled with the name of the woman, the location of the photo, and the year, leaving it completely up to the viewer to piece these relationships, friendships, and chance meetings together. These are the women that have shaped Mikael Kennedy’s life over the past decade – and they are beautiful."

Dear Friends,

Yesterday marked the end of the Polaroid blog Passport to Trespass. It has been a wild run of 6 years, 7 artists books, thousands of miles, and 1,477 Polaroids. Thank you to everyone who was a part of this work; whether you picked me up on the side of the road, fed me, let me sleep on your couch, walked with me, or just checked in every now and then to see where I have been.

For those of you who have already asked: No, I am not out of Polaroid film.
While Passport to Trespass is ending this is NOT the end of my Polaroid work: only of the blog format.

As I am shooting some of the last Polaroids ever, I want to take the work off the internet for awhile, to spend some time with each image before I put them out into the world. I'd like to end the way I began: wandering around with an SX70 and no plan. Although, I am preparing for some exciting new projects this year, here are just a few highlights of what's to come:

In the Seventh Volume of the Passport to Trespass series we are updated on several of the central characters in this decade long documentation of wandering and adventures. Spanning 2008 and 2009 as I visited old friends and roamed the northern coasts of the country, these portraits give us a paused moment in the journey, where we face the individuals who have played recurring roles in the Passport to Trespass story.

Volume 7 takes on a new form from previous publications, this booklet printed in Zine form is a 24 page piece containing 20 portraits shot with the rare Polaroid film; TZ Artistic. These muted and faded images remind us of the quickly vanishing Polaroid film itself.

‘Saltwater River Guard’ is a selection of Kennedy’s Polaroid work as well as C-Prints from his ongoing series of American landscapes titled; ‘The Odysseus’. This will be the first time that these two projects will be shown together and a unique opportunity to engage with one of America’s most inspired young photographers in the intimate space afforded by Gallery 37A.

Artist Bio
Mikael Kennedy is an artist living and working in New York City. His Polaroid work has been widely exhibited and published in the US and abroad. Kennedy’s Polaroids are represented by the Peter Hay Halpert Fine Art Gallery in New York City and recently the subject of a solo show at the historic Chelsea Hotel in New York City. Kennedy’s Polaroid work has gathered international attention with Kennedy exhibiting at the International Polaroid Symposium in Cardiff, Wales this year where he was invited to lecture on his practice and motivation as an American Artist and were recently acquired for the permanent collection at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas.

About Gallery 37-A
Gallery 37-A is a new project space, initiated in December of 2009 by Brook Delorme and Daniel Pepice. Notes on “Saltwater River Guard”
In ‘Saltwater River Guard’ we are invited along with Kennedy on his extensive travels, viewing a focused moment: the summer of 2009 and two trips that took him to the rivers and shorelines of New England. Kennedy’s landscape photography in recent years has been likened to the work of the Hudson River Painters; described as a blending of the sublime and the vision of Trancendentalists, it is a view of man’s search for his place in nature. Drawing upon the classic myth of The Odyssey’ for its’ title, The Odysseus presents us with the vision of a solitary man on a quest for Home. In Kennedy’s vision of the world, Home becomes more of an emotion, and a sense of place rather than any one physical destination.

Kennedy’s Polaroid work -- a documentation of his life, travel, and surroundings, began in 1998 with the discovery of a used Polaroid SX70 camera. The Polaroid camera quickly became a constant companion, leading to 12 years of documenting and cataloging his wandering life. It is in this blending of these two bodies of work, which gives the viewer both the journey and the destination in this unique exhibition.

I'll be showing 10 Polaroids in Cardiff, Wales
with Polaroid artists from all over the world at the end of February.
Going out to visit and participate in the show on March 6.

"Do I have to paint you a picture? is an artist-led temporary artspace in the heart of Cardiff. Throughout a six-week programme of lens-based exhibitions, an evolving curatorial project will utilise a disused shop unit within one of the city's increasingly sparse (yet ornately beautiful) Victorian and Edwardian Arcades. In response to photography's evolving technological and ideological complexities, Do I Have To Paint You A Picture? will aim to bring together disparate artists working in photographic and film media and to contextualize their work through an imaginative and inventive curatorial process.

Highlighted artists include Daniel Gustav Cramer, Mikael Kennedy, and Richard Bevan, each exhibiting excerpts from their extensive and acclaimed bodies of Polaroid photographs. As we reach a period in time that may see the decline of quirky analogue techniques in photographic arts practice, the relationship between our new generation of lens-based practitioners and technologies of the past will spur the imagination of the project's curator.

An accompanying one-day symposium will give artists, academics, arts professionals and members of the public the chance to engage in photographic theory, especially in relation to technologies and culture."
